Beagle

English scent hound bred to hunt rabbits in packs. One of the world’s most recognisable and most food-motivated breeds.
A Beagle is a cheerful, robust, genuinely child-proof little hound, and living with one means accepting that you rank second to any interesting smell for the rest of its life. It was bred to follow a scent line for hours with a pack, telling the hunters where it was by voice. Remove the pack, the scent and the hunters and you have a dog that howls, digs and follows its nose over the horizon — unless you give all that instinct somewhere legitimate to go.

Right for you if
  • You want a small, sturdy, tolerant family dog with real cheer in it.
  • Another dog, or near-constant human company, is part of the deal.
  • Scent games, tracking or long sniffy walks sound like fun rather than a chore.
  • Your neighbours are far away, forgiving, or deaf.
Wrong for you if
  • Recall off-lead in open country is a requirement. With a Beagle it is a hope.
  • It will be alone in a yard all day. You will meet your neighbours, and not warmly.
  • You free-feed. A Beagle treats every meal as its last and looks like it.
  • Fastidious about garden beds. Beagles excavate.
