Domesticated Asian carp, a thousand years in ponds and bowls — the most kept, most misunderstood fish on earth.

Everything the fairground taught you about goldfish is wrong. This is a carp: a big, sociable, cold-water animal that grows to dinner-plate scale in a pond, lives ten to twenty-five years when housed honestly, and produces more waste than any bowl could ever process. The three-year “bowl goldfish” did not live a short natural life; it was slowly poisoned by its own ammonia. Housed like what it is — big filtered tank for fancies, pond for single-tails — the goldfish is one of the hardiest, friendliest, most rewarding fish in the hobby.

Wrong for you if

The vessel in mind is a bowl, a vase or anything without a filter.
The tank is tropical and stocked; goldfish want it cooler and messier than tetras tolerate.
Nobody wants the weekly water change a carp demands.
It was meant as a disposable starter pet. There is no such thing here.

Welfare and sourcing — read this part

New tank syndrome is ammonia accumulating when fish are added before the biological filter works — typically in the first one to three weeks — and those bacteria take four to six weeks to establish.¹² The bowl goldfish lives this syndrome permanently. Cycle first, fish second, and the species’ real lifespan appears.
Most fish disease follows stress, poor water quality and overcrowding¹ — and no common pet is overcrowded more routinely than a goldfish. One fancy per 50-odd litres after the first is the honest arithmetic.
Buy from a tank where every fish is upright, active and spot-free — goldfish are sold in dense shop tanks where one sick fish means exposure for all. Quarantine before adding to a pond or established tank.
